24th Annual TributeOnce again The World Arts Foundation, Inc. launches preparations for the annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute.  2009 marks the 24th consecutive year of this event.  This blog will present behind the scenes video of the meetings and preparations that take place prior to and the day of the celebration.  This is truly a labor of love of many people who come together and share a common dream.  This blog will allow those who can not make a meeting be able to review what went on.  It is also a blog for the public to share in the excitement and dedication that so many volunteers engage in as they have for 24 years.  Comments can be made at bottom of this blog entry. We will post entries as soon as we have them edited.  So come back often.

October’s meeting was held at Ken Berry’s home in Happy Valley.  We have split the video into two parts.  Part one is now available. (SEE LINK BELOW)  We will issue part two the week of November 2, 2008.  Be sure to come back often for updates.  Be sure to visit The World Arts Foundation for historical & current information:  http://www.worldartsfoundationinc.org/

There’s No Place Like Home - Mortgage & Foreclosure Summit, November 22, 2008

Posted in Community Service, 2008, Mortgages, Foreclosures by Administrator on the October 25th, 2008

Local community activist and longtime advocate Rev. Renee Ward contacted me recently concernng the economic crisis we find our country in, and most especially, how it is affecting our local community.  These are hard times for many of us.  If you yourself are not experiencing the fallout from Wall Street, you know someone who is.  The mortgage fiasco is hurting families around the nation and here in Portland.  Rev. Ward has provided some timely news about an event designed to bring knowledge - and just possibly, hope to many of us.

The summit is free and open to the public offering an intimate setting for consumers to share their stories, network with legislators and access civic and state agencies that provide resources to help avoid predatory lending practices and prevent foreclosure threats via education and advocacy.

“I encourage everyone who knows anyone that is facing the threat of foreclosure as a result of a default on their mortgage or fraudulent lending practices should attend this summit to find out what options they have before the clock runs out on your opportunity to save your home,” stated Rev. Renee’ Ward, event coordinator and community activist whose family member is facing the threat of foreclosures on their property, due to possible fraudulent lending practices. Legal counsel has been secured by the family and the case is pending further investigation.

S. Renee Mitchell - Moving On

By now most of you know that local Oregonian columnist, S. Renee Mitchell has been the object of downsizing as an ever shrinking readership of newspapers in general has swept the nation - not to mention the economic downturn.

I received a very nice letter from Renee several weeks before her column made the official announcement.  Aside from the initial shock, I began to wonder what this means to the many readers of her column.  You may not have agreed with everything she said, or maybe you did.  Doesn’t matter.  What matters is a voice that resonated with the community on so many levels, has been removed from a major source of communications in this city.  There are no words to express the loss this represents.  Life will go on, and we will all collectively forget the richness that Renee brought to our Oregonian.  Just another layer of sadness we’ll bury among the flotsom and jetsom of a tanked economy.  What follows are some excerpts from her letter to me:

Hi Greg,

In case you hadn’t heard: After 10 years at The Oregonian, being
nominated for two Pulitzer Prizes, and named No. 1 Commentor in five Western
states by the Society of Professional Journalists, I have taken the
paper’s very generous buyout offer. I officially leave my job on Oct. 1.

I will remain based in Portland, where I will continue to invest my
talents, voice and energy into community building and becoming a full-time
writer on my own terms. (see attached press kit) My various projects
include publishing my first novel, discovering my potential as a
multi-media artist, and expanding my reach as an international speaker,
performer and women’s advocate. I also plan to travel more, record more CDs
(have you bought my new songs on iTunes yet?) and spend more time with
my twin boys, who are living in Detroit with their father. (If you
didn’t know that, here’s the link to my Aug. 20 column:
http://www.oregonlive.com/news/oregonian/renee_mitchell/index.ssf?/base/news/1219191906326940.xml&coll=7
In a few weeks, I will be traveling to Guam, New Orleans and Florida to
speak and/or perform my now-one-woman show, Tangoing With Tornadoes
(www.tangoingwithtornadoes.com)  I ask for your prayers, advice, insight
and referrals for even more paid gigs. :-) I am also available for hire
as a media consultant, graphic artist, grant/proposal writer, copy
editor and ghost writer, among other God-given talents that I want to
share with the world. Please keep in touch!

Keep raising hope,
Renee

Helpful Handyman Northwest

Entrepreneuer, Jeff Wackerly who has been an entry in this blog before (http://blackstonebuilder.com/) has added an additional business to his repertoire:  http://helpfulhandymannorthwest.com/

This company specializes in the little day to day kinds of help that homeowners find themselves in need of.  Maybe you need new locks installed in your home, or minor repairs to the home.  For some of us gutters are an accident waiting to happen, and fixing a broken window is just asking for a ride to the emergency room.  Come to think of it, the last time I attempted a major electrical update my screwdriver managed to get welded to the outlet box.

Here is another small business in your community making a difference in the way we live.  Go to their website for more information and details.

Arlington National Cemetery

Posted in Observations, 2008 by Administrator on the June 6th, 2008

Visiting Arlington National Cemetery is not something for the faint of heart or foolhardy. Seeing the sheer number of grave markers takes my breath away. Each marker represents someone’s father, or brother, sister, mother, husband, wife, aunt, uncle, son, daughter, friend - a memory etched in stone. A life given in service to their country.

The older I get, the more weary of this life I become. When I view these hallowed grounds something of my life is taken away. My mind sees lives disrupted; youth lost in a moment of peril and bravery and fear and sorrow. I envision the moment loved ones are brought the news of their precious sons’, daughters’, husbands’, wives’ passing…

There is everywhere in this holy place a sense of loss and pride. I leave here consoled and convicted. Consoled that these dear ones are properly remembered. Convicted that my freedom to roam these grounds was at their expense. It taxes my ability to catch my breath. Why them? Why not me?

Space is running out at Arlington. There is talk of expansion to accommodate those who are coming. Talk and rumor of war. Will there ever be enough room?

I grow weary of this life… http://nlemedia.com/Newsletter/NewsletterJune08.html

African American Hunting Association - Donny Adair

Posted in Entrepreneuers, 2008 by Administrator on the May 5th, 2008

I was first introduced to Donny Adair at the 22nd Annual Tribute to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration held at the Highland Community Church facilities in January of 2007.  Donny had several roles in the program not the least of which was interviewing various dignataries and persons of interest.  (see video)

Once you meet Donny it is hard not to be enthusiastic about whatever he is discussing.  Donny is a dynamic speaker sought after for his unique skills in the field of public speaking.  He is also a devout family man, dedicated to his wife and children, his neighborhood and his country.  But he is more than that.  He is an avid outdoorsman steeped in the knowledge of hunting, fishing, camping - you name it.  And, he is a person of such character that he has set out in a new venture to share his love of the outdoors with all.

That’s why he launched The African American Hunting Association, LLC this year and is currently building a website dedicated to that end.  His signature logo (above) was designed to show the link between our urban and recreational nature.  His mission statement says it best:

The mission of the African American Hunting Association, LLC (AAHA) is to increase the number of African Americans and urban residents living in the United States involved in hunting, game management, shooting sports and conservation.
You can read more about Donny and his organization at:  www.africanamericanhuntingassociation.com

This is an exciting endeavor Donny has begun and we wish him every success.

RWC - Ron Wackerly Construction

Posted in Entrepreneuers, 2008 by Administrator on the March 15th, 2008

I’ve known Ron Wackerly for something close to thirty years now.  He’s been a remodeling contractor in the Portland area since 1987.  My wife & I have had Ron do work for us over the years.  In my past life as a custom furniture make/cabinet manufacturer/bon-vivant I provided custom work for his company.  Reliable, moderately priced and attentive to client requests, he has built a steady clientel over the years.

Recently, Ron launched a website:  http://ronwackerlyconstruction.com which is well worth the view - especially if you consider who designed this site (moi).  Seriously, if you are looking for an honest, knowledgeable - licensed, bonded, insured (CCB#: 54673) contractor, give Ron a call: 503.289.2619.  Check out “Rocky”: http://ronwackerlyconstruction.com/Flash/Rocky/Rocky.htm

HYPE - HYPERBOLE … A Curmudgeon’s Perspective

Posted in Observations, 2008 by Administrator on the February 15th, 2008

The same dictionary defines “HYPERBOLE” as:1: : extravagant exaggeration (as “mile-high ice-cream cones”)

February 2009 is slated to be the age of “Digital Television” and by government edict you will not be able to receive television signals unless you purchase either a new digital TV, or a set top converter for your existing unit (but wait, if you sign up now you can get a $40.00 voucher toward the purchase of this converter, but hurry, supplies are limited). Why? …Now I love my wife dearly, trust me, but she says she read the reason is because the government needed those analog signals for security reasons…

STOP!

First of all, if you are reading this then you must be sentient. And if you are sentient, then it is wholly possible you have been exposed to written accounts of American history. Regardless of how much white-washing our history books have gone through, you know something about Watergate, Monica Lewinsky, and good old Tricky Dick’s “I am not a crook” speech. What you should have learned from all of this is that man is fallible and, for Pete’s sake, you can’t believe everything the government tells you. You do remember the little flap over a certain President on a ship announcing the war in Iraq had been won. (May 1, 2003) http://www.state.gov/p/nea/rls/rm/20203.htm

That said, then you are probably aware the real reason for this change is the result of a lobbying campaign in D.C., which has succeeded beyond its wildest dreams. As my grandpappy always said when examining some truth or other, “follow the money!”. And, baby, this is all about the money – billions upon billions of dollars to be made off the American people. It’s a get rich scheme that has a government guarantee – a new gold standard.

Conspiracy? Goodness, no. This is the new economic. You’ve been living with it for years. Remember the computer? The indispensable tool of modernity? The tool that only works so long before you give up and buy the next latest and greatest version? The computer industry perfected built-in-obsolescence, upgrades and gadgets that you just cannot live with or without. It is only fitting, therefore, other business models climb on board. And to succeed they need “early adopters” (people and organizations that buy-in to the latest craze regardless of price, hype or functionality.) - lots of “early adopters” - like you, and you, and you, and you. Point is, they need all of us to be “early adopters” to succeed. Hence the Herculean lobbying efforts.Oh, but then there is the payoff. Everything is going to be so much better and reliable like Microsoft’s Vista operating system. (http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9012140) (http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/microsoft/archives/132891.asp)

Unfortunately, just because it is “digital” doesn’t mean it is better. And just because “high definition” shows pimples, wrinkles and warts with more clarity than “standard definition”, it doesn’t mean you want it or need it. It just means a very outspoken minority has persuaded your government to impose this upon you – for your own good, to be sure. Today, “early adopters” are the beta testers for industry. There was a time they had to pay beta testers. Times, they are a changing.

Here’s the deal. The whole HD thing is not mature. The cameras cost more. The storage needs vis-a-vis computers and hard disks is roughly 4 times more. The rendering times to bring all those extra pixels into a cohesive timeline are longer. And whereas a top-of-the-line blank DVD costs about $0.50 per disk, a BluRay or HD DVD disk runs around $19.00 per disk (http://www.kingdom.com/category.aspx?categoryID=895&adcode=yahoo&OVRAW=Blu%20ray&OVKEY=%E2%80%9Cblu%20rays%E2%80%9D&OVMTC=advanced&OVADID=10067047521&OVKWID=109455742021).

By the way”, I asked her, “which format will you be wanting your disks in? Blu-ray (Sony standard) or HD DVD?” Did I point out we’re in the midst of an, as yet, undecided battle over formats that harkens back to the old Sony beta versus VHS squabble? (http://www.videomaker.com/article/13754/2/) Any of you “early adopters” out there care to tell us what happened to the Sony beta units you bought?

How about the players for your Blu-ray or HD DVD? Let me see, I can buy a good ole DVD standard player/burner for about $35.00. What’s that you say? Your Blu-ray player costs how much? No, seriously, how much? http://www.circuitcity.com//ssm/HD-DVD-Blu-ray-Disc-Players/sem/rpsm/catOid/-16221/N/20012866+20012872+20016221/link/ref/rpem/ccd/categorylist.do?WT.mc_n=449183&WT.mc_t=U&cm_ven=PAID%20SEARCH&cm_cat=ADVERTISING.COM&cm_pla=CATEGORY%20-%20VIDEO%20HDWR-

For all theHYPEthe industry is spewing, the new wave of products simply are not mature and I just haven’t bought into the “public” as beta tester role that has been foisted onto us. No, I am not a “technophobe”. I subscribe to a higher authority: COMMONSENSE.

The Real Johnny Glucose

Addendum

  2/29/08

2/29/08This article was originally published on February 15th. Since that time the industry has announced that Sony’s Blu-ray technology will be the new standard. For those early adopters who invested in HD DVD, my condolences. However, lest the rest of you start feeling smug about your Blu-ray persuasion, there is disconcerting news. At a recent industry tradeshow I attended, a major DVD replication & duplication firm lamented that the best price he could get for Blu-ray blank disks was $7.00/disk in minimum lots of 1000. That pretty much puts the home user and small business owner out of the market. I am seeing prices of blank disks in quantities under 100 at $19.00/disk. Plus this: Sony has insisted that every Blu-ray disk be encrypted so that all disks are copy-protected. That means sharing your disks by letting others burn duplicates is now impossible. Hopefully, we’ll see hackers come up with work-a-rounds.

2/29/08This also: as a small firm doing small batch duplications (under 500 per batch) our top of the line burning equipment (7 bays) could be purchased for around a $1000.00. The equivalent Blu-ray duplication equipment starts at about $7200.00 (7 bays). http://www.octave.com/cgi-bin/shop/shop.cgi/choice/Blu-Ray%20Duplicators/subchoice_1/Copy%20Master%20II

What all this means to the consumer: higher prices.
