The 24th Annual Tribute to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - The Audacity of Hope transcends the Tenacity of Despair
Once again The World Arts Foundation, Inc. launches preparations for the annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute. 2009 marks the 24th consecutive year of this event. This blog will present behind the scenes video of the meetings and preparations that take place prior to and the day of the celebration. This is truly a labor of love of many people who come together and share a common dream. This blog will allow those who can not make a meeting be able to review what went on. It is also a blog for the public to share in the excitement and dedication that so many volunteers engage in as they have for 24 years. Comments can be made at bottom of this blog entry. We will post entries as soon as we have them edited. So come back often.
S. Renee Mitchell - Moving On

By now most of you know that local Oregonian columnist, S. Renee Mitchell has been the object of downsizing as an ever shrinking readership of newspapers in general has swept the nation - not to mention the economic downturn.
I received a very nice letter from Renee several weeks before her column made the official announcement. Aside from the initial shock, I began to wonder what this means to the many readers of her column. You may not have agreed with everything she said, or maybe you did. Doesn’t matter. What matters is a voice that resonated with the community on so many levels, has been removed from a major source of communications in this city. There are no words to express the loss this represents. Life will go on, and we will all collectively forget the richness that Renee brought to our Oregonian. Just another layer of sadness we’ll bury among the flotsom and jetsom of a tanked economy. What follows are some excerpts from her letter to me:
Hi Greg,
In case you hadn’t heard: After 10 years at The Oregonian, being
nominated for two Pulitzer Prizes, and named No. 1 Commentor in five Western
states by the Society of Professional Journalists, I have taken the
paper’s very generous buyout offer. I officially leave my job on Oct. 1.
I will remain based in Portland, where I will continue to invest my
talents, voice and energy into community building and becoming a full-time
writer on my own terms. (see attached press kit) My various projects
include publishing my first novel, discovering my potential as a
multi-media artist, and expanding my reach as an international speaker,
performer and women’s advocate. I also plan to travel more, record more CDs
(have you bought my new songs on iTunes yet?) and spend more time with
my twin boys, who are living in Detroit with their father. (If you
didn’t know that, here’s the link to my Aug. 20 column:
http://www.oregonlive.com/news/oregonian/renee_mitchell/index.ssf?/base/news/1219191906326940.xml&coll=7
In a few weeks, I will be traveling to Guam, New Orleans and Florida to
speak and/or perform my now-one-woman show, Tangoing With Tornadoes
(www.tangoingwithtornadoes.com) I ask for your prayers, advice, insight
and referrals for even more paid gigs.
I am also available for hire
as a media consultant, graphic artist, grant/proposal writer, copy
editor and ghost writer, among other God-given talents that I want to
share with the world. Please keep in touch!
Keep raising hope,
Renee

Helpful Handyman Northwest

Entrepreneuer, Jeff Wackerly who has been an entry in this blog before (http://blackstonebuilder.com/) has added an additional business to his repertoire: http://helpfulhandymannorthwest.com/
This company specializes in the little day to day kinds of help that homeowners find themselves in need of. Maybe you need new locks installed in your home, or minor repairs to the home. For some of us gutters are an accident waiting to happen, and fixing a broken window is just asking for a ride to the emergency room. Come to think of it, the last time I attempted a major electrical update my screwdriver managed to get welded to the outlet box.
Here is another small business in your community making a difference in the way we live. Go to their website for more information and details.

Working with owner, Pat Dallaire on the August West & Co. website, www.augustwestandcompany.com, offered me an opportunity to see the detail and workmanship of a fine craftsman and artisan.
For 23 years I stood at the helm of a small company devoted to custom furniture, furnishings and finishes. I never thought I would meet anyone who could come close to the standards and attention to detail my company did - until now. August West and Company, under the leadership of Pat Dallaire, has met and exceeded my demands for quality and value.

Announcing A New Sports Show

NLE Media Productions and the African American Hunting Association Launch Outdoor Sports Show
Friday , August 15, 2008 NLE Media Productions and the African American Hunting Association, LLC launch the first episode of a new show highlighting African Americans and other urban dwellers as they pursue the great outdoors. As the opening segment states: “African Americans, while they are about 13% of the population, according to the U.S. National Fish and Wildlife Service, they make up only 1% of those who hunt. We believe hunting, fishing and other outdoor sports to be wholesome, healthy, family fun.”
13 episodes are currently being filmed by a joint effort of Greg Gordon (NLE Media Productions) and Donny Adair (African American Hunting Association). Gordon and Adair bring years of experience and know-how to this enterprise. The show will be aired initially on the African American Hunting Association website (http://aahunt.com/ , http://blackhunting.com/ , and http://africanamericanhuntingassociation.com/ .), then ported for cable access and finally, made available on 2 episode DVD’s.

African American Hunting Association - Donny Adair

I was first introduced to Donny Adair at the 22nd Annual Tribute to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration held at the Highland Community Church facilities in January of 2007. Donny had several roles in the program not the least of which was interviewing various dignataries and persons of interest. (see video)
Once you meet Donny it is hard not to be enthusiastic about whatever he is discussing. Donny is a dynamic speaker sought after for his unique skills in the field of public speaking. He is also a devout family man, dedicated to his wife and children, his neighborhood and his country. But he is more than that. He is an avid outdoorsman steeped in the knowledge of hunting, fishing, camping - you name it. And, he is a person of such character that he has set out in a new venture to share his love of the outdoors with all.
That’s why he launched The African American Hunting Association, LLC this year and is currently building a website dedicated to that end. His signature logo (above) was designed to show the link between our urban and recreational nature. His mission statement says it best:
This is an exciting endeavor Donny has begun and we wish him every success.
RWC - Ron Wackerly Construction

I’ve known Ron Wackerly for something close to thirty years now. He’s been a remodeling contractor in the Portland area since 1987. My wife & I have had Ron do work for us over the years. In my past life as a custom furniture make/cabinet manufacturer/bon-vivant I provided custom work for his company. Reliable, moderately priced and attentive to client requests, he has built a steady clientel over the years.
Recently, Ron launched a website: http://ronwackerlyconstruction.com which is well worth the view - especially if you consider who designed this site (moi). Seriously, if you are looking for an honest, knowledgeable - licensed, bonded, insured (CCB#: 54673) contractor, give Ron a call: 503.289.2619. Prophet’s Son - Kenneth John Marks, Author
The Prophet’s Son trilogy shines a powerful light on the evil that fills the world. It shows how purposeful evil, which lives in the person of Satan, finds its expression in Man’s fallen nature. Yet it also shows how faith in the God who loves us can defeat the devil, who seeks Man’s destruction. It reinforces the hope that if anyone will turn from his sin and seek forgiveness from his loving God, He will save him, as He ultimately saved the story’s protagonist, Phinehas.
Phinehas was the son of a great (fictional) Jewish prophet named Eli, who lived in Jerusalem during the early days of the Persian Empire (in the 6th century B.C.). Eli called the Jews to repent of their sin or be destroyed. Like all the prophets before, Eli was murdered, as was the rest of Phinehas’ family. As a result, the prophet’s son harbored hatred and bitterness in his heart. As the story starts, Phinehas meets a man named Judas, Satan’s servant, who hated Eli, and who eventually goads Phinehas into making some choices which have tragic consequences for him and his wife and daughter. Prophet’s Son also shows how Phinehas’ evil choices affect not only him and his family, but also his friends and acquaintances; even people unknown to him who live hundreds of miles away in the wilderness east of Jerusalem.
My book is also intended to be searing commentary on our society. In this post-modern, quasi-delusional culture of ours, all types of vile and demented behavior tend to be excused away: she murdered her children because she was abused as a child, for example. And whenever something bad happens, it is always someone or something else’s fault; we have therefore become a society of “professional” victims who can never take responsibility for what happens to us. With this in mind, Phinehas only finds redemption when he takes personal responsibility for the evil things he has done and the tragedy that resulted.
Prophet’s Son was written with a poetic touch. The language is highly descriptive and metaphorical. It is work of art (modest to be sure); but one that requires the reader to invest his mind and soul in it, as does all art. No one who’s been moved by a work of art simply lets it go; rather they reflect on it as it changes them in a fundamental way. The trilogy is not a quick read; but the serious reader will not mind that, because the book will speak to his or her soul. For example, several of my readers have said that the first book, Descent to Darkness, made them uncomfortable because as Phinehas was falling into a deep pit of darkness, it reminded them of times in their own lives when they too stared down into that darkness. But they also found hope and joy as Phinehas comes to terms with the evil he as done (Sojourn in the Desert), repents of it, and then is redeemed (Return to Grace); all by the work of our loving God in his life. One reader said that after she got over her initial discomfort, she literally could not put the book down. She told me that it was one of the most important books she had ever read. My prayer is that this will be the case for many others.
I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, attended college at the University of California at San Diego, where I earned a liberal arts degree, concentrating in mathematics and the humanities. I have been studying biblical history for many years. I am especially devoted to studying the people and events of Old Testament times. I began writing the Prophet’s Son trilogy in 1996. It was published in 2005. I am currently working on two more books, one an anthology of short stories based on Biblical themes; the other based on Revelation 12, the rebellion of the angels. Both should be available in 2008.
You can find the Prophet’s Son trilogy on line at http://www.ProphetsSon.com and at all the major on-line book sellers. (Search keyword “Kenneth John Marks”.)

Sunshine Dixon - The Art of Change Gallery
I have know Sunshine Dixon for a little more than a year and a half now. If anyone was ever gifted with a name that fit their personality, it is Sunshine. When she enters a room, the light comes on and regardless of what the day has been - it is new and fresh and bright. An artist of many talents, she dedicates herself to the task at hand.
From her biography we learn the following: Sunshine Dixon is a community visionary gifted to find new ways to live outside of the box. She continually uses her creativity to help others move towards their dreams. As an author, spoken word and visual artist this native Oregonian sees herself as a agent of change. She named and co-directs the Art of Change Gallery which is housed downtown in the United Way building at 619 SW 11th.
As a visual artist her powerful works represent the places where she lived, worked, and played: the South; northwestern cities, principally Portland and Seattle; and the Bahamas. Religious subjects, jazz clubs and women are overlapping themes in her work. Sunshine also makes forays into abstraction, with dance associations, and themes of motherhood.
NLE Media Productions hosts a webpage on our site dedicated to “The Art of Change Gallery“: http://nlemedia.com/UnitedWay.htm

Mark Lindsay’s “Rock & Roll Cafe”
You could see it in their eyes. The music, the cars, the memories of a time when life seemed simpler, and in many ways, more vibrant. Every now and then, the music and the crowd were drowned out by the roar of an engine being turned over and revved up. It was magnificient - and many a pacemaker lunged forward with the gas pedal floored.
For my generation this was a return to our Mecca, our time and our music. We remember the great places of our youth, “Yaw’s Top Notch”, “The Tick Tock” and “Scotty’s Burgers”. All of this made possible by Mark Lindsay and his team of memory makers. For those of you who don’t know who Mark Lindsay is, my regrets. For those of you who do, what can I say?
Monday, August 27th found Lindsay walking and talking and reminiscing with those of us who danced to the music and grew up on burgers and fries - the real thing. Lindsay’s establishment touches on the moments that made us who we are. The restuarant is alive with memories of the past, plus things for the present and future.
But there is more to Lindsay than just the showman, entrepreneur.
In the showbiz world it is not too often that you find a celebrity genuinely interested and engaged with his public. Lindsay impressed me as someone authentically involved with his community. He didn’t have to meet and greet, much less allow photos. His opening would have been a success even if he hadn’t shown up. He strikes me as a generous person who knows the value of the people who made him famous.
NLE Media Productions’ “Small Business Forum” is about entrepreneurs who engage the community. We salute and applaud Mark Lindsay’s “Rock & Roll Cafe” and wish him every success. And this also, “Thank You” - thank you for bringing these memories back home.

The NorthStar Coffeehouse, LLC - Kathy Chellis & Pam Brooks-Haines - owners
There is nothing so satisfying as a fine expresso drink among friends in a comfortable setting.
Kathy Chellis & Pam Brooks-Haines have taken a house on North Interstate (7540 N. Interstate Ave, Portland, OR 97217) and converted it into one of the finest coffee houses in the Rose City.
The exterior is a gem to the eyes with its lush plantings, outdoor seating and North Portland charm. The interior, too, reflects an eclectic taste with nooks and tables reflecting both new and old themes.
In the summer and spring the outdoor seating reigns supreme, but the air-conditioned interior provides relief for those of us with Irish skin. Winters and fall will find patrons cozied by the crackling fire with their favorite tea or coffee drink. They serve Stumptown coffee & expresso - probably the finest homegrown coffee purveyor in the city. And if you know anything about Stumptown, then you know of their ongoing training and teaching of quality service and expresso drinks.
As a mentor of several small busnesses in Portland, I send my clients to NorthStar to learn important lessons, like customer service and consistency in presentation. Kathy & Pam have built a loyal following because of their attention to these 2 issues. You may find this hard to believe, but many businesses fail as a direct result of not having one or the other of these qualities. I once counselled a small business that served expresso drinks. I visited their shop over a period of nine weeks and sent friends of mine there, also. In that nine week period neither I nor my friends heard nor saw the shop owners welcome or thank a single customer - including us. Not one single drink we ordered was drinkable. “Bitter”, “flat”, “tasteless”, “watery”, “lukewarm” describe what we received for our $3.00 orders.
At The NorthStar Coffeehouse you will experience customer service and consistency in product, plus a comfortable setting with free wifi. Their hours are Monday thru Saturday, 7:00am to 5:00pm; Sunday, 8:00am to 2:00pm. Phone number: 503.285.5800; Fax: 503.285.5082

Dean Martindale - Videographer
Dean Martindale is a proud native of Portland, Oregon. He has a love for things digital, especially if they carry a logo which looks like an apple. Dean’s first interaction with a computer came at the impressionable age of 10 when he tried a drawing program on an Apple IIe in grade school. It was love at first byte. Yet his love for computers was always tempered by his desire to express himself which computers in the 80’s and 90’s were not designed for. Instead those computers were often designed as tools such as a hammer or even something as utilitarian as a fork. Finally, however, the personal computer has become a tool of self expression. From podcasting, to video editing software, to the increased quality of consumer video and audio products it has become easier than ever for anyone to express themselves using the digital tools of a computer. Combined with the web and services such as Youtube and Flickr it is just as easy to publish yourself. These are exciting time for everyone with the possibilities limitless, times Dean is excited to be a part of. When not pondering the possibilities of tomorrow and the capabilities of today Dean is student in the Multimedia program at P.C.C. Recently Dean got bit by another bug: video editing and production. A series of classes introduced to the process of both video production and editing..and he LOVED it. At P.C.C. Dean is the events coordinator for the Multimedia club. Dean has given presentations on both podcasting and cutting edge technologies. In addition he has a more hands on job as an artisan bread baker. When not busy with school and work Dean enjoys rowing and singing in choral groups. Dean can be emailed at pdxdean@mac.com and welcomes people to contact him. Dean is currently working on creating a web gallery for his video works as well as coordinating a lectures series at PCC on the “bleeding” edge of technology.

Dean Barron - Videographer/Photographer
I met Dean Barron a couple of years ago while transitioning to a new church, Temple Baptist. We hit it off right away and have worked together on numerous projects since. His experience and wisdom on all things video have been of tremendous help to me. Dean does weddings, bar mitzvahs, special events and news.Dean Barron aka “DEANO”: Cameraman for KOIN T.V. and Independent Videographer/Photographer
From the time I bought my first Kodak Fiesta box camera when I was seven years old, I was hooked on photography. By the time I entered the eighth grade I was a seasoned journalist. In high school,
between my sophomore and junior years my interest in still photography exploded with weekly opportunities to shoot, develop and print 5 X 7 photos of each cabin group at the summer camp where I worked. I took every possible Journalism Tech course offered at Mt. Hood Community college, and worked my way through school as an intern at KOIN, until spring term of my second year, when I was hired to replace a full-time news film cameraman. I left KOIN-TV in 1973 to join the photography staff at KMGH in Denver. In 1976 I moved across town to KBTV, now KUSA. I helped Channel 9 make the transition from film to ENG, and became the first full-time ENG photographer at KBTV.After a brief stint with KIRO-TV in Seattle I returned to Denver and took a year off from TV to become the Director of Public Relations for Western Bible College. In February 1978 I decided to return to my roots, here in Portland, and eagerly returned to my “home” station, KOIN. During my years back at KOIN we have covered the eruption of Mt. St. Helens, the crash of a United Airlines DC-8 in East Portland, a dozen major snow and ice storms, major landslides, floods, fires, elections, issues and a host of other stories that have affected the lives of our viewers. deanbarron@comcast.net

Blackstone Builders LLC - Jeff Wackerly: owner
I first met Jeff Wackerly when he was knee-high to a grasshopper - which in the language of my new found senility means, a long time ago.
My old company used to do work for Jeff’s dad, Ron, who was a local contractor. We also knew each other from church and social gatherings. Jeff has certainly followed in his father’s footsteps, but also, has clearly created his own unique niche. What impresses me about Jeff is the scope of projects that he undertakes and the attention to detail. His is a fairly young business but already shows a maturity beyond his actual years. He recently launched his website and is busy with a variety of new projects.
Here’s a little sample of his company’s philosophy: “Whether building a new home or remodelling a current structure there are certain aspects of the process that require attention. As a prospective or current homeowner you need a reliable source to ensure timely, efficient, cost effective and quality construction. No single builder can do all phases of construction, therefore, you need to be able to rely upon a builder who manages his projects and resources in a manner that assures compliance at all levels. To do this a builder needs to assemble the best team possible given the scope of the project. This team is composed of tradesmen and other professionals including electricians, plumbers, roofers, framers, finish carpenters, masons, designers/architects, HVAC installers, and others.
Your builder needs to assemble this team based upon the job requirements as well as the individual experience level of each team member. In addition his responsibilities include verification that each member’s license, insurance and bonding are current.
A good builder is a proficient communicator. He must be able to articulate the construction parameters in such a way that not only you , but also, building inspectors, permit processors, insurance carriers and team members can understand and comprehend. To be a good communicator , one must be a good listener. This facility allows your needs and wants, concerns and issues to be addressed. The ability to listen is essential when dealing with all the players in a building project and cannot be over emphasized.
At Blackstone Builders you will find a team that emulates best practices to ensure your project experience is timely, efficient, cost effective and quality controlled.”

Small Business Forum - May 2007 - 1 Year Anniversary
One year ago this month we started posting videos of our Small Business Forum on the net. This month and next we are taking time off as we prepare and engage ourselves in a caravan to Boise, Salt Lake City, Bryce Canyon, The Grand Canyon, Zion, Sidona and all places between. So we have put together a list of speakers we have had over the last year. It is not a complete list by any means, but it represents the kind of subject matter near and dear to the Small Business Forum. We start with the first part of Anne E. Denecke’s keynote address from April 2007:
Anne E. Denecke; Dr. Laura Torgerson; Renee Mitchell; Stewart Kent; John Doherty; Shareefah Abdullah
At NLE Media Productions we offer many services including the editing that was done in the videos shown on this blog. For more details on what we can do for your business or organization:

Dr. Laura Torgerson - “Stress: symptoms,/causes/solutions”
This forum exists for the purpose of bringing small businesses together to share, network and learn from others. To that end, each month we bring in a keynote speaker on various topics. This month we were graced by Dr. Laura Torgerson, co-owner of the Everyday Wellness Clinic, 1033 SW Yamhill St. #300, 503-222-1315, who spoke to us about “Stress” - symptoms, causes and solutions. You can read Dr. Laura’s bio at: Dr. Laura Bio. This is a subject that small businesses need to pay attention to. You can view her presentation by clicking on this link: Dr. Laura Video.
We also ask members of our forum to tell us about their businesses. Corey C. Rust, coreyrust@gmail.com, 971-998-5381, spoke to us about his business venture and has provided a PowerPoint presentation: ACN Overview. You can view his presentation at: Corey Video ACN’s website is: www.acninc.com
A subject that came up during our meet & greet period was about bio-diesel vehicles. You can read a great deal more about this subject by going to www.plantdrive.com
John Doherty - “Ask The Taxman” - owner: A.S.I. Tax & Accounting
Our forum this month is titled, “Ask The Taxman” and our guest speaker, John Doherty has spoken to us before (see May 2006 blog). We hope to make this a regular segment in our Small Business Forum series. This is just one more reason why we are the fastest growing forum in the Northwest.
Stewart Kent - Marketing Consultant - owner: Kentington Consultants
If this month’s Small Business Forum is any indicator for future forums, then get your places locked in now. We will be turning folks away at the door. This month’s hot topic was “Marketing“, something small businesses don’t always allow for. A show of hands indicated less than 50% of you have a long range plan in effect for a marketing strategy.
Our keynote speaker, Stewart Kent opened eyes and imaginations with his well honed-delivery. His practical experience and years of work in the field served attendees well. Stew has over 50 years of marketing, advertising, sales and promotional experience. He has worked for major corporations, advertising agencies and both the print and broadcast media in locations such as New York City, Tampa, Atlanta, Norfolk, Virginia - plus Los Angeles as well as Cincinnati and Idaho prior to moving to this area 15 years ago.
He is currently the Director of Sales and Creative Services for “Printing Expressly For You”, a ten year old full-service printing business located in Vancouver, WA. (360-885-2045; www.pefy.net; stew@pefy.net) He also has just opened a marketing and Advertising consulting firm called “Kentington Consultants” where he will help medium and small businesses with their marketing and advertising needs.
